Do you want to be a part of a profession that believes vocational nurses respect each patient’s uniqueness and collaborate with each patient and their families while striving to achieve an optimal level of functioning throughout the lifespan? Glen Oaks College, Riverside campus, offers training to help you prepare you for an entry-level position in the Vocational Nurse program.

The 12-month Vocational Nurse program prepares students to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), the national examination that allows Licensed Vocational Nurses to practice in California. The demand for health care professionals is at a high level through 2016.*

We believe that nursing education is a process of mutual responsibility among Glen Oaks College, the educator, and the student. Through theory and clinical training, the student will prepare for the vocational nursing profession.

  • The objective of the Vocational Nurse program is to prepare students with theoretical and practical skills to qualify for an entry-level position on a nursing staff in hospitals, extended care facilities, physician offices, community health care agencies, psychiatric facilities, and other specialty areas. Upon completion of the Vocational Nurse program, the graduate is eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN), the national examination that allows Licensed Vocational Nurses to practice in California.

    In addition to qualifying to sit for the NCLEX-PN exam, graduates will also:

  • Successfully complete all theory and clinical learning units.
  • Demonstrate behavior that encompasses standards of professional conduct, attitudes and appearance.
  • Form nursing judgments based on legal, moral, and ethical responsibilities under the supervision of an RN or M.D.
  • Provide patient/family education and evaluate the effectiveness or response.
  • Listen, read, speak, and write clearly and purposefully using appropriate medical terminology.
  • Utilizing knowledge, understanding of issues, and with integrity, will act to benefit his/her community.
  • Demonstrate individually or as part of a team, competency in defining and analyzing problems.
  • Cooperates within an organizational structure to achieve institutional objectives and employee relations.

    The philosophy of the Glen Oaks Vocational Nurse program centers on a belief that the practice of nursing is consistent with a compassionate healthcare provider who possesses the qualities of caring, adaptability, creativity, collaboration, and who is analytical and contemporary in practice and theory.

    Upon successful completion of the program requirements, the graduates will be awarded a diploma. Although the College will assist students with job placement, finding employment is the individual responsibility of the student. The College does not guarantee that any student will be placed in any of the jobs described, or placed at all.
